BUMPKIN is one of the staple restaurants on Westbourne Park Road, a lovely colourful presence on the street that you can’t miss if you’re walking by.
The chain has 3 other restaurants around London in Westfield, Chelsea and South Ken but this one is my favourite and so one dreary and chilly Tuesday night, the boy and I headed there for a hearty mid-week pick-me-up to sample their new Autumn Menu. Bumpkin prides itself on their authentic, seasonal produce and has a lovely interior similar to a country house kitchen that’s instantly inviting with its warm green and brown leather colour palette…

We started our Tuesday night feast with the Chicken liver pate and tangy pear chutney with sourdough toast and the Goats Cheese firebread (I think we were seduced by the dramatic name, along with the fact it was cooked in an oven with a name – Bertha!). Bumpkin’s new ‘Bertha’ oven is it’s pride and joy and cooks things with a beautiful, earthy, rich smoky flavour.
Next up was, for me, what is hands down (in my humble opinion) THE best pie in London – the Bumpkin Cow Pie. Served alongside a bed of mashed potato, it’s lathered in puff pastry that softens and melts in the delicious meaty and red wine sauce below when you break into it. You can then enjoy the huge, chunks of tender beef that melt in your mouth. De-lic-ious.
Whilst I was bent over inhaling my delicious cow pie, the boy had plumped for the Venison and was thoroughly enjoying it’s smoky flavour (also cooked in Bertha), cooked to pinky perfection and served on a bed of creamed savoy cabbage, crispy bacon lardons and vanilla shallots.
Last but certainly not least was pudding, which consisted of a huge cheese board for me (friends and fellow readers know I can’t resist cheese if it’s on the menu!) and a dish of spicy mulled wine poached pear, accompanied by gingerbread and clotted cornish cream. I honestly defy any human being to not find this food utterly delicious.
Any of London’s Bumpkins are the perfect antidote for this cold Autumnal weather, whether it’s a cosy post-work week night dinner you are craving, or a long lazy weekend breakfast or lunch. They are also affordable too and come with a homely, farmhouse kitchen-kinda vibe – a true neighbourhood favourite (and the best Bloody Mary’s I’ve tasted too FYI if you need a hangover cure).
If you head down this weekend, they’ve even got some cute Halloween festivities going down too…
For details on all of their restaurants and menus, visit the Bumpkin website. They’re also booking now for Christmas and take private dining bookings.
Enjoy!
