So, working in Entertainment PR coupled with a genuine passion for reading, means I get through a LOT of magazines a month. One thing I have always been fascinated by is the art of the Magazine Cover. What makes a good cover? Who exactly is the perfect cover star?
Editors will tell you the simple fact that a cover is over and above just a sales tool – if it’s inviting, a consumer will want to read it. Not disagreeing with this, I also think there is an art to creating a truly great one that gives them a timeless feel. Whether or not a cover is from 40 years ago or 4 days ago, a truly striking image would be able to be framed and last the test of time.
Trying to edit a top selection for this post has been tough and I’ve narrowed it down by simply those that jump off the page/screen the most (in my humble opinion). Varying from iconic films covering cult film magazine Little White Lies, to sirens Rosie Huntingdon Whiteley and Megan Fox to model of the moment Cara Delevigne managing to make a tarantula look alluring. There will no doubt be an update to this post in a few months with a fresh batch of 2013 covers but for now…
Enjoy!

From the top (L-R):
– President Obama covers Rolling Stone magazine following his re-election in November 2012.
– Kate Moss covers British Vogue. Almost make-up free and angelic. Perfection.
– Kiera Knightley covers Interview magazine. All cheekbones and cigarettes. J’adore.
– Cara Delevingne covers i-D. Always creators of truly magnificent images, a few of the i-D covers made my top 20 but this makes the cut.
– Sienna Miller covers a summer issue of British Vogue. Sienna’s smile and beachy hair are the envy of every female reader here.
– Teen sensation Zac Efron covers Wonderland; somehow the magazine’s image takes his look away from teen to young man.
– Rosie Huntingdon-Whitely channels Jessica Rabbit for LOVE, looking almost unrecognisable but just as beautiful.
– Megan Fox for GQ. The year when she was EVERY male’s fantasy, this cover is pure sex and perfect for its target market.
– Leo DiCaprio for Rolling Stone. An angry and brooding cover which invites the reader to want to know what’s behind those perplexed eyes of his…
– Lena Dunham for New York Magazine. Launching her self-penned show for HBO, Girls, this image is the perfect balance between her self-confidence and her naivety.
– Blake Lively for Marie Claire UK. Every young woman and every young man’s dream, she sells this issue by looking utterly splendid.
– Michael Fassbender as his character in movie SHAME for Little White Lies. The cover was made from torn up pieces of pornography and makes an incredibly striking image that ties in beautifully with the tone of the film itself.
