Portobello Road is one of London’s most famous streets and so sadly, on a Saturday this means the inevitable influx of tourists. But, if you fancy a taste of the real Notting Hill, Little Miss will give you a tip (ssshhh)…..
Rather than walking down Portobello from Notting Hill Gate, get the tube to Westbourne Park instead (Hammersmith and Circle Line) and walk down to it this way (turn right out of the station and left onto Westbourne Park Road – you’ll hit the junction with Portobello Market in about 5 mins walk. This little trick means you avoid the crowds and come onto the road at the perfect spot – right amidst the hustle and bustle of the food market (head there hungry too. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed).
This weekend the boy and I hosted a dinner party for my sister and her boyfriend, i.e the perfect excuse for a stock-up session at the market. Post-jog and wandering Portobello in the sunshine just before lunchtime on a Saturday made me fall in love all over again with the chaotic, neighbourhood-y feel of this part of London.
The local sellers are all complete characters, friendly, chatty and helpful and not forgetting the cost of the actual market goods themselves – SO much cheaper than a supermarket and arguably better quality (3 x fresh, ripe avocados for a pound? Yes please!).
I stocked up on fresh fruits, veg, cheeses for the cheeseboard (my ultimate favourite), alongside fresh flowers to deck out our humble little abode ready for a night of food, booze and good chat. Heaven.
Here’s a few pictures from my quick stroll around the market – enjoy! (Also note, the food market doesn’t open on a Sunday, so make sure you get there on a Saturday to avoid disappointment).
(Anything better than an indulgent cup of sugary, chocolatey churros?!)
(My fresh purple Hydrangea taking pride of place in the living room).
