BRUNSWICK HOUSE CAFE

BRUNSWICK HOUSE CAFE

As a new resident to South London, I’m getting into the habit of exploring one new place a month that I’ve had on my ‘London foodie list’. Last month, this was to try out a cafe inside a very handsome Georgian mansion, bizarrely situated on a huge roundabout in Vauxhall. Welcome to Brunswick House Cafe!

My best friend Laura and I enjoyed a delicious lunch at this hidden gem of a spot. The building is owned by Lassco, an architectural salvage company, and the building is therefore a melting pot of antique-filled rooms and corners, where pieces are on sale and the different rooms across the three crumbling floors are available to hire for photoshoots and parties.

The actual restaurant itself is almost breathtaking in its theatricality when you enter the room – large-scale European posters scale the walls alongside ginormous mirrors and a ceiling flanked with quite literally hundreds of antique chandeliers. Being greeted by such a sublime setting, we were intrigued to see if the food was as impressive…luckily this exceeded our expectations too. The menu is seasonal and also slightly theatrical in its design, placing seemingly quite random ingredients on the plate that somehow work perfectly together on the palate. My burrata with rhubarb was eaten in approximately two minutes flat and Laura’s vegetable curry salad was perfectly balanced. One tip is also to order the truffle mash potato if it’s on the menu that day – absolute heaven.

Lunch was followed by a snoop around the rest of the building – a truly incredible space that you can imagine being the grandest of residences back in the 1700s. There are seven rooms available for venue hire or private dining across the three floors, each offering something unique depending on the size of your party or event. I can imagine this being the most stunning setting for an intimate London wedding reception or a great party house for a big birthday celebration with friends. Brunswick House Cafe 2Brunswick House Cafe 3 Brunswick House Cafe 1 Brunswick House Cafe 10 Brunswick House Cafe 6 Brunswick House Cafe 8 Brunswick House Cafe 7 Brunswick House Cafe 13

You can book online HERE and I highly recommend a visit. There’s also an online store for the antiques on sale (but be warned some of the prices are not for the faint hearted!). Breakfast, lunch & dinner is served daily and wine, cocktails, tea / coffee and snacks are available all day in the Bar or on the Terrace. Now the weather is looking up, this would be a perfect place to sit with a glass of wine.
