Weekend getaway: Babington House, Somerset

Last November, the boy and I headed to Somerset for a wintery weekend getaway. Clearly a long overdue post, I came across our pictures the other day and wanted to share, should any of you need inspiration for your own romantic getaways!

Babington House is part of the Soho House Group and is a real little slice on heaven in the middle of nowhere.

I’d recommend hiring a car from any car dealership near me if visiting (it’s about a 3 hour drive from London) or you can get a car from the nearest station (click site to know about it). We weren’t sure what to expect (apart from the best car from www.conklinhondasalina.com/used-inventory/index.htm for a long drive) for the weekend other than wanting to totally chill out. The house has, amongst other things, a gorgeous restaurant, deli bar, snooker room, library and a cosy study – so plenty to do, but also not too much so you can still completely relax.

We started off our weekend with some snooker and G&T’s…

The rooms are a mixture and vary on where you stay – we stayed in one of the coach-houses and loved it, we had the largest bathroom I’ve ever seen, a deliciously comfy bed, a Roberts radio and french farmhouse-style shuttered windows.

Also, included in the room price is afternoon tea so make sure you stock up on the delicious scones and drinks come 4pm!

Foodwise, we plumped for the room service and had a delicious pasta dish and a Babington burger, with cocktails made directly in your room (the specific cocktail menu caters for a mixologist to come and make it for you for the perfect secluded, romantic option). The highlight, however, is the breakfast in bed.  They bring you not only your order (whether it’s a full English or Avocado and bacon on toast) but also newspapers of the day, your drinks and an entire breakfast hamper stuffed with croissants, fruit and freshly squeezed juice.

We spent the second day a short stroll away from the main house in the grounds of the Cowshed spa. The spa is perfect for relaxing in rainy winter with a massage or mani/pedi or for getting active in the summer on one of the five tennis courts, cricket pitch or croquet lawn. Feeling scrubbed, rubbed and manicured within an inch of our lives we borrowed a pair of the complimentary Hunter wellies from the back of the house and went for a country stomp of a walk before drying off infront of the incredible fireplace in the library and getting ready for the drive back to London.

I can’t recommend Babington House highly enough. It’s not cheap but it’s certainly affordable and is brilliant for a weekend getaway as a real treat once a year or so – come rain or shine, it’s just as enjoyable.
